Round Java Island -- Day 8 -- Adieu, Indonesia !

Today is our 10th day in Indonesia and we shall be leaving for Kuala Lumpur from Surabaya airport. Thus far, every meal (except breakfast) we had here was different. We have sampled a good varieties of local food that we wished for, oh yes, except one.
Remember when we were at Tawangmangu, on Day 6, the lake resort, I saw a lady selling mixed vegetables in thick peanut sauce outside my hotel room? Something I wished to try but called it a miss due to hygiene reason. You will never believe this : On the last day here in Indonesia, before I went to the airport, I found it on the hotel's buffet breakfast table!!

Enjoying a wonderful breakfast.

Yes, this is it !

A variety of vegetables,

mixed with three different types of dressing, : peanut sauce, curry and shredded coconut...

There !! I made a small portion because there were just too many interesting food to try. Taste delicious and satisfying !

Another corner with some other interesting "Rojak" .

After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye.

The airport looks like ordinary hotel from a distance.

Rotiboy!! Not sure this brand originated from Indonesia or Malaysia.

Met this Malay lady while waiting to check-in. She and her family enjoyed their holidays here too, especially the food, which they bought a lot back for friends and relatives. However what thrilled her husband most is the driving experience in Indonesia, the excitement in overtaking on the road that you have to be here in action before you could understand. Hahahha.....

P/S: Wonder why it took me ssssoooooo lloooong to finally complete posting my Indonesia trip? It's due to a " %#€|¥\%£\~\%{?,=]}[€.{" stupid software I used ! ! !

Each time after I spent a few hours choosing photos, writing, everything gone missing while up-loading it ! I have to re-write, upload, re-write, upload, re-write, upload..... and the maximum was to re-do the same posting for 5 times !! ( mood da hilang oh...! )

You might notice that I have to break down one day's journey into a few parts, so if it gone missing again, it does not kill so many cells !

Really really mad with this software. So a lesson to learn here, choose your software carefully !! Make sure the software you purchased ( got to pay money some more ! ) has been well-tested.

Round Java Island -- Day 7 ( Part 4 )

After squeezing through the narrow lane of fish market, we went to the House of Sampoerna, which is a museum owned by the Liem Family, one of the richest Chinese families in Indonesia. There are live exhibits, art gallery, cafe and shops.

The museum is located in front of a cigarette production plant which is still in operation.

House of Sempoerna is a Dutch colonial-style building built in 1862, previously used as an orphanage managed by the Dutch. The founder, Mr Liem Seeng Tee bought over in 1932, using it as a cigarette production plant.
The compound consists of a large central auditorium, the east side has been transformed into an unique structure containing a cafe and an art gallery whilst the west side remains the official family residence. The large warehouse-like structure housed the cigarette production plant, from tobacco and clove processing , blending, hand-rolling and packaging to printing and finished goods processing.

Hmmm.... It shows 1893 here instead. Maybe this portico was built later than the main building.

The founder and his wife.

Still the founder's portrait. But notice his wife was wearing kebaya in this painting as compared to cheongsam in the earlier one.

These tinted glass door panels show high ambition of Mr Liem. The two Chinese characters on the entrance is ' Liem ' and ' king ' .

Tobacco leaves mixed with clove made this hand-rolled cigarette.

This is how they roll the cigarette. First you place a piece of paper on this machine. Then some tobacco on it and you pull the handle like pulling an one arm bandit. And it's done ! An experienced worker is able to roll at the speed of 325 sticks per hour!

This is the most prestigious brand, Dji Sam Soe, means " 234". We were told this is Mr Liem's lucky number. If you add up the three numbers, it equals to "9", Mr Liem's favourite number too.

Even the toilet is decorated with the cigarette's wrapper as wall paper. Walao,

When Mr Liem first came to Indonesia, he was selling groceries and sundries.

An old safe. Must have kept lots of money then.

From the story of the founding family, we have a good understanding of how Chinese came to this part of the world, how hard they had worked and finally found a base in this land. No hard work, no sweat and tears, there would be no gain. Same old story everywhere, right?

It's already dinner time when we came out of the museum, so we decided to pop into the cafe for a western meal.

Fish and chips. No big deal though.

I had salad for dinner. This is yummy.

She lost one of her tooth today. So the big smile is to commemorate this occasion.

If we have a heart like a child, we will also enjoy ourselves no matter where we are, what circumstances we are in. Smile, and the world smiles with you !

Back to our hotel. Looking out of my room, I see this beautiful garden, quiet and peaceful. I am so blessed to be here, happy, healthy and enjoying every moment of my life.

What an enjoyable and eye-opening trip I had over the past 9 days. ( Including two days in Jarkata ) This trip has truly changed my perception of this country called Indonesia.

Thank you.

Round Java Island -- Day 7 ( Part 3 )

Despite the usually notorious traffic jam from Malang to Surabaya, we managed to reach Surabaya by lunch time. Amazing! Traffic seems to be particularly smooth on this day. So, we were able to have lunch at Surabaya instead of stop by rest place along the way.

With the help of Google map, we found the best Ayam Soto in town, which is the small shop lot seen at the background, with a thin tree stood right at its center.

Well, it did not disappoint us.

The plate with the founder, Pak Sadi's portrait on it. You have a choice of either roasted chicken or fried one.

The chicken is good, no doubt, but the gravy is excellent ! It is prepared with lots of herbs in it. You can add lime juice and pounded groundnut to your own liking and it really gives you a kick. Best Ayam soto we have ever tasted!

Since this is the last night we spent in Java, we chosen a plushy 5-star heritage hotel, the Hotel Majapahit, marking a beautiful ending to our memorable trip. With Agoda's 40% discount ( if I remember correctly), it still cost us Rp1.6 million per night for a room.

At the lobby, Christmas' s decor is still seen.

At the reception. The painting at the back shows the original building where the front entrance has been extended now with a new building attached to it, that's where we stand now.

Afternoon tea at the garden, anyone?

The legendary Hotel Majapahit is a colonial styled building, originally named Oranje Hotel by the builder, Lucas Martin Sarkies. Construction was completed in 1910. 25 years later, an art deco style extension was constructed in the front of the hotel. In 1996, the then named Hotel Majapahit underwent a US$36 million restoration and reopened as the premier 5- star hotel in Surabaya. Today, Hotel Majapahit restored to its former glory remains a remarkable reminder of a period when graceful architecture and lush green gardens hosted elegant events for ladies and gentlemen.

Long corridor leads to guest rooms.

The original entrance, I think.

Just love this bath room. There is a separate shower cubicle.

Old fashion switches made of bronze.

The correct way to make the bed with room to tuck in your feet. Not many hotels do it this way nowadays.

This boy is always so relax !,

A cozy corner.

Gateway to a secret garden ?

I love to sit like this.

Very unique design.

After checking into the hotel, we went for a tour around Surabaya, making a visit to the fish market too.

The market is along a narrow lane. It was very congested with lots of people walking around. However the people here were very polite. Some how they would just made way for our car to squeeze through.

You would never believe our MPV could actually passed through this lane. Looks impossible, right?

Hmmm....they eat mud crab too, instead of flower crab.

I think it's hard to cheat with a weighing scale like this.

Good balancing.
